ECOFISH research activites are divided into 5 working packages

Work Package 1

Weather and Climate

WP1 is working on climate change projection scenarios and marine weather forecasts and risk maps of extreme weather events focusing on coastal environment.

WP1 is led by Dr Sarah Osima, Tanzania Meteorological Authority, and Dr Martin Stendel, Danish Meteorological Institute, The National Centre for Climate Research.

Work Package 2

Marine Environment

WP2 focuses on building a solid baseline knowledge of the biodiversity and functioning of the Tanzanian marine pelagic ecosystem and the risks that climate change and pollution pose for it. This will also provide a basis for the long-term monitoring of the Tanzanian marine environment.

WP2 is led by Dr Barnabas Tarimo, University of Dar es Salaam, Institute of Marine Sciences, and Prof Torkel Gissel Nielsen, Technical University of Denmark, National Institute of Aquatic Resources.

Work Package 3

Fish and Fisheries

WP3 will analyse the effect of climate change on biology (e.g. diets, predator-prey interactions, reproductive processes) of key fish species and on fisheries yields, and propose new research-based management actions.

WP3 Fish and Fisheries is led by Dr Alistidia Paul Mwijage, Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute, and Prof Brian MacKenzie, Technical University of Denmark, National Institute of Aquatic Resources.

Work Package 4

     Local Knowledge and Adaptation

WP4 investigates indigenous forecasting knowledge of weather and climate, knowledge and perceptions on pollution and fisheries, the adaptation measures used by women and men in artisanal fishing communities, and the formal and informal institutions and regulations that influence them. WP4 will also propose how co-creation of sustainable solutions, integration of local knowledge and gender issues in policies can support sustainable adaptation strategies and blue economic growth.

WP4 is led by Dr Mwanahija Shalli, University of Dar es Salaam, Institute of Marine Sciences, and Dr Thilde Langevang, Copenhagen Business School, Department of Management, Society and Communication.

Work Package 5

          Capacity-Building and Dissemination

WP5 Capacity-Building and Dissemination is a collaboration among all ECOFISH partners in Tanzania and Denmark, and is coordinated by Pia Pannula Toft
